2013: Icicles

Located along the shores of Lake Superior in Redridge, one of numerous quaint townships in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, are these spectacular icicles. While there is a legal way to get to these pendent masses/spikes of ice formed by the freezing of dripping water, efforts to follow it were marred by still visibly flowing Salmon Trout River, its underlying currents beneath seemingly frozen landscape and delicate ice sheets.

While ever so grateful to the 100+ inches precipitation received so far this winter, effects of a (relatively) warmer day were quite visible: breaking mounds/heaps of snow/ice near the edge of the lake halted the snowshoe adventure about 50 feet from these icicles. With questionable cell phone coverage and help of any sort being hours away, decision to test Mother Nature remained unacted, and satisfaction was found in observing them from afar.
